Why Do You Workout?
There’s a speech that has been going viral from the Barbie movie and a clip of it really stood out to me. As a health coach this topic is discussed a lot….
I took an instagram poll asking this question… why do you workout? It’s a pretty straightforward answer and most of my following is into wellness so I got a lot of feedback.
The number one answer was around mental wellbeing , number two was for energy and number three was to prevent problems in the future. Only TWO people replied to look good.
Now I can accept these answers as good ones and say look at us! We’re out here working out and taking care of our mental health the way we should and not being “vain” or priortizing our appearance over more valued traits…..
But is this true? Asking myself this question…my authentic response is number one to achieve the body that I like. Key words “ I like”… I do admit to first exercising to be thin and toned but I do this to achieve my body goals to please myself. However, with this follows more energy, decreased depression and overall stronger mental wellbeing.
When I ask clients why they want to lose weight, they rarely respond saying it’s to look better. Although men will say it more!
Am I suggesting that everyone is lying? Or that they should first priortize their “size”…. no it’s just interesting and something I feel like we can’t talk about as much anymore.
Something to consider…
If you need to or desire to lose weight from an appearance perspective, it may be more beneficial for you to start with this goal. The scale can provide you the evidence that you may need to continue carving out the time each day for exercise, movement and healthy nutrition. It’s harder to measure your mental health or even attribute the increased energy you might be having to the workouts. Not to mention the long list of other life optimizing benefits you’re getting from working out!
The folks that are consistent and not thinking about moving the scale more than likely had body image in mind at the start of their journey then it took off from there. * blanket statement and yes of course this may not be everyone
Then I can promise you this…
Our mind body and soul operate best when in balance. By giving yourself the gift of daily movement and the discipline to keep it up then you too will say you work out because it truly makes you happy :)
